Box Breathing

This coping strategy one is Stika and Muriel’s (the cats) favorite breathing exercise. Why? Because it’s Box Breathing! Picture a box with four sides and maybe a cat inside and breathe around it. Breathe in for a count of 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for four. Repeat as many times as needed until you start to feel more calm. Breathing is one of the only involuntary body systems you can take direct control over. And when you do a breathing exercise it works by directly impacting your physical stress response in your body by lowering heart rate, blood pressure, and muscle tension. This creates that physical feeling of relief.
