Cognitive Defusion with One Word
Today’s coping strategy is another one for pesky thoughts that get you get hooked on. You know the ones, the thoughts that repeat endlessly when you’re feeling upset or sad. One great way to get those thoughts to zip it is by fighting words with words. Now stay with me. This is weird delusion skill and weird on purpose. And you can think about it, but until you give it a shot and actually experience what happens when you do this, it won’t work for you. Ok, here’s the skill: pick one word and say it over and over again out loud for about 30-60 seconds. When we do this, you may start to experience the sensation that this word sounds weird and odd, like its a garbled nonsense of sounds mashed up, and then the word doesn’t make sense any more, it looses its meaning. The traditional word used by the creator of this skill is “milk.” So try it with me. Milk milk milk.
