Naming the Mind
Naming the Mind is a cognitive defusion skill. Defusion is a silly word that means separation or detachment. Naming the mind that gives you stress thoughts can help you detach from what that part of your mind is saying. When choosing a name, the sillier the better. The name of my stress mind is "Polly." My clients have used names like "Earl," "Eunice," and "Karen." It's a great skill to help consistently identify and detach stress thoughts.
